In the ever-expanding list of provinces and states in which it is accredited – including British Columbia - naturopathic medicine is covered by virtually all extended medical insurance plans.
Depending on the nature of your insurance plan, you may also be entitled to added coverage under my designations as a homeopath and Bowen therapist.
Additionally, you may be eligible for provincial coverage of naturopathic consultations under MSP.
Those who may be eligible for naturopathic coverage under MSP include:
- MSP Premium Assistance recipients;
- Income Assistance recipients;
- Convention refugees;
- Inmates of B.C. Correctional Facilities;
- Individuals enroled with MSP through the At Home Program;
- Residents of long term care facilities receiving the Guaranteed Income Supplement (GIS);
- Individuals enroled with MSP as Mental Health Clients; and
- First Nations individuals with valid B.C. Medical Plan coverage through the First Nations Health Authority.
Even without explicitly applying for anything, you may be automatically eligible for such MSP naturopathic coverage.
If provided with your PHN (personal health number) and date of birth prior to your initial consultation, I can verify whether you qualify.
Premium Assistance is the most common route by which patients gain access to naturopathic benefits.
Regular Premium Assistance is generally provided automatically each year in accordance with the most recent tax information.
However, this means that MSP must be informed manually of any major changes in your income or disability status over the past year - which can be done through the Application for Regular Premium Assistance.
Even if you do not qualify for Regular Premium Assistance, you may still be eligible for naturopathic coverage via the Application for Temporary Premium Assistance.
Temporary Premium Assistance allows those who are experiencing current unexpected financial hardship to qualify for naturopathic coverage.
Additionally, patients who have psychiatric conditions for which they have been hospitalized or are at risk of other serious consequences can qualify for naturopathic benefits through enrolling as Mental Health Clients.
Finally, the At Home Program provides naturopathic benefits to assist the parents of children with severe disabilities.
